  123. ===== Installation =====================================

  125. To install the VENDINFO Basic Toolset, simply unzip or copy all files
  126. into a single directory, which will be devoted to VendEdit.  If you are
  127. an author, or you expect to create VENDINFO records for testing
  128. purposes, you should plan to leave all these files in that directory.
  129. If you are a distributor, and plan to use only VendPrcs, then it will
  130. eventually be appropriate for you to place VENDPRCS.EXE on your path,
  131. and many of these materials will not be needed after your
  132. familiarization with the toolset is complete.
  133.  
  134. Once you've installed this package:
  135.  
  136.    o  If you're an author, or wish to try out VendEdit, simply
  137.       execute the command "VENDEDIT" WHILE IN THE VendEdit DIRECTORY.
  138.       Select "Help", and read through the first few items in the
  139.       help index.  You should find all the information you need.
  140.  
  141.    o  If you're a distributor, or wish to try out VendPrcs, you
  142.       should begin by reading VENDPRCS.DOC.  For authors, the
  143.       basic VendPrcs functions are executed automatically from
  144.       VendEdit.

  146. You may also wish to obtain and install the VendView viewer. It is
  147. available for use without charge, but is packaged separately from
  148. VendEdit because it is also used by end users who have no need for the
  149. VendEdit or VendPrcs programs. VendView is generally obtainable as
  150. VNDVUExx.ZIP, where "xx" represents the version number. If VendView is
  151. installed, the user of VendEdit will be able to make use of it in
  152. reviewing any VENDINFO.DIZ files that are created. It is a significant
  153. convenience.

  160. The evaluation ("shareware") version of the VENDINFO toolset is provided
  161. for evaluation only, on an "as is" basis.  The registered version is
  162. provided with a 30-day money-back guarantee, provided all materials are
  163. returned, and -- in the case of the editor -- no products have been
  164. distributed with included VENDINFO files.  This toolset is intended for
  165. use by producers and distributors of shareware and similar products, who
  166. are assumed to be familiar with the use of software tools.  The included
  167. tools allow both production and evaluation of VENDINFO files, and
  168. provide all the capabilities necessary for the user to verify correct
  169. functioning of those tools for his/her purposes.  Users are advised to
  170. do so.

  200. copyrighted products of Rams' Island Software and are protected by
  201. United States copyright law and also by international treaty provisions.

  203. All rights not expressly granted here are reserved to Rams' Island
  204. Software.  The use or distribution of these products is expressly
  205. prohibited, except as authorized by the terms of this agreement.

  207. You may not use, copy, rent, lease, sell, modify, decompile,
  208. disassemble, otherwise reverse engineer, or transfer the licensed
  209. program except as provided in this agreement.

  211. U.S. Government Restricted Rights:  Use, duplication, or disclosure
  212. by the U.S. Government of the computer software and documentation in

  222. for evaluation purposes for a period not to exceed thirty days.

  225. toolset, with the following exception, applicable only to the VendEdit

  228.    You MAY NOT distribute VENDINFO.DIZ files that lack authentication
  229.    codes.  These codes are tied to your company name, and are produced
  230.    only by the registered version of VendEdit.  They are intended to
  231.    provide a level of source authentication for your VENDINFO.DIZ files.

  233. If you continue using this software after the thirty-day evaluation
  234. period, or wish to produce "authenticated" VENDINFO.DIZ files for
  235. distribution with your products, you MUST make the prescribed
  236. registration payment to Rams' Island Software.  (NOTE: Single-line
  237. BBSes which are not associated with a business, and which do not charge
  238. fees to their users, may register VendPrcs without charge; see

  244. The software and the disks on which it is contained are licensed on
  245. a non-exclusive basis to you, the purchaser, for your own use.  You

  248. If you have purchased a license to use the VendEdit editor, you may
  249. also make use of the VendPrcs processor for the purpose of verifying
  250. correct functioning of VendEdit and correct contents of the VENDINFO.DIZ
  251. files you produce.  Any other use of VendPrcs requires a separate
  252. license.  Similarly, purchase of a VendPrcs license allows you to use
  253. VendEdit to verify correct functioning of VendPrcs, but does not imply
  254. a license for other use of VendEdit.

  257. and make as many copies as needed for backup and archival purposes.

  264. A fundamental goal of the VENDINFO system is that distributors must be
  265. able to rely upon automated testing to determine whether or not they
  266. may distribute your products.  Therefore, any VENDINFO file which is
  267. distributed with your products must satisfy these conditions:

  269.    It must be an "authenticated" file, containing valid authentication
  270.    codes issued to you under your company name, or a company name you
  271.    are authorized to use for this purpose.

  273.    The "License for Use and Distribution" section must contain the
  274.    actual text of your license agreement, rather than a pointer to
  275.    some other document, and must include the following statements or
  276.    their equivalent: "The attached VENDINFO data record is hereby
  277.    incorporated by reference.  Any distribution satisfying all the
  278.    distribution requirements expressed in that data record is hereby
  279.    authorized." (This means that distributors will NOT have to consult
  280.    the "License for Use and Distribution" text itself, UNLESS you select
  281.    "See Attached Text for Additional Requirements" in the data record.)

  284. provide in the VENDINFO record without worrying about violating your
  285. copyright on the descriptions therein.  As a condition of use of
  286. VendEdit, you also agree that every distributor shall have the benefit

  290.    product, you authorize the distributor's use of your unaltered
  291.    product descriptive texts without further permission.

  329. the shareware version of this product, and provided they claim no
  330. ownership of these products.
